The Electric Universe, by David Bodanis

A Capacitor is a device that is used to store energy by separating charges.

Capacitance is the measure of a capacitor to store charge. The Capacitance is a property of the system and does not vary with voltage.

The capacitance of a pair of conductors depends on the geometry of the conductors

Charging a Capacitor

The work done in charging a capacitor appears
as electric potential energy U stored in the capacitor.
This result applies to any geometry.

A dielectric is a non-conducting material. When a dielectric is inserted between the plates of a capacitor, the capacitance increases.

Electric discharge will occur if we apply an Electric Potential that produces an Electric Field that is stronger than the dielectric strength of the dielectric material.
