Evolution of the Earth - Homework II Questions
Hint: you should be using all the 990 letters allotted! You should be editing down from twice as many letters (words) to the requisite 990 letters (words)! Do not answer the questions 'on the fly' (without thinking).Your answer should demonstrate a thorough reading of Bryson. Be clear, concise, and complete. Make your sentences count. Each word is important and valuable. Make references, connections, examples and bring in new unique thoughts.
10 points for correct answer, 10 points for references, 5 points for in-depth analysis.

1) How does 'proxy data' provide credibility to the developing theory that humans are responsible for the current trend in Global Warming? Discuss one the many slide sets in more detail.

2) Bryson discusses the formation of the Solar system and it's many features. Write a 'poem' about the creation of the solar system and the characters involved. Read the chapter, think about it. Write from your heart.

3) Why are chemical reactions more likely in the atmosphere and hydrospere? What chemistry is taking place in these spheres? Use information from Lister and Rothschild and Bryson's, Into the Troposphere. for your answer.

4) In chapter 12, Bryson writes about the discovery and theoretical development of plate tectonics. Besides the shape of the continents, flora and fauna and fossils, what were some of the other problems with a static earth model that a dynamic plate tectonics model could explain?

5) Bryson writes about the fire below in chapter 14. From the ashbeds in western Nebraska and the kimberlite pipes in South Africa to earth's magnetic field, clues abound of the interior of the earth. How and what do we know about the interior of the earth?

6) What does the Manson and Barringer crater have to do with the KT impactor and Comet Showmaker-Levy? What part did iridium play a in the demise of the dinosaurs?

7) In his chapter, The Rise to Life, Bryson makes some extraordinary comments, "Complexity is natural. There is nothing special about the substances from which living things are made. So powerful is this natural impulse to assemble that many scientists now believe that life may be more inevitable than we think." Write a reaction to this chapter and these statements.

8) Describe and comment on the funniest, most memorable item in any of these Chapters in Bryson.
