Chapter 16 July 1314 Wave Motion Sections 1,2,3,4,5 Questions A) Derive the velocity of a wave on a string. Explain your derivation. B) Explain the reflection and transmission of waves in different media. C) Derive the KE of a wave on a string. Problems 9,10,11,13,18,19,24,25,34,36,68 Due: July 18, 2005 Help Page 1) Diagrams are not for show! Diagrams help you communicate what you know about the problem at hand. Draw them carefully. Label any parameters. Be neat and concise. Your diagram should be first. 2) You must explain some steps in your solution. I do not need you to explain algebraic manipulations. Why did you set something equal to zero? Why is the momentum before = zero. Why is it possible to set the KE before = PE after, etc. Be concise. Do not be too wordy. I do not need paragraphs of useless information. 3) Your solutions should start from the basic physics principle not from a derived equation. You can leave some algebra steps out but not the important ones. I do not need definitions for the Cons. Laws. 4) All solutions in black. Diagrams in green. Ex.1,2,3 5) Most important: Please keep all solutions to one page. If you can fit two solutions on one page. . .good. Do not start a solution on one page and end on another. 6) Work the problem out on scratch paper then transfer it to a clean piece of paper. Do this for all your problems. This is a good way to clear up any mistakes and it will help you study for the test. 7) Solving problems from first principles is a process. You are trying to communicate your understanding of the observed patterns in nature. This is not hard. Read the book, follow the examples, and apply your skills. On the the test, I will be giving points for your diagram, points for your solution, and points for your reasoning and explanation. Chapter 17 July 1418 Sound Waves Sections 1,2,3,4,5,6 Questions 9,10,21 A) Explain how the doppler principle has helped astronomers.Draw a diagram. How do sound waves interfere with each other? Draw a diagram and explain constructive and destructive interference. B) Explain equation 18.3. C) What is Fourier's Theorem? How is this theorem helpful? Problems 1,3,5,8,9,13,14,16,20,27,40,47,60 Due: July 2,0 2005 Help Page

The test will begin at 10:20 am. Bring your books. After grading the homework, I can say that most of you need to concentrate on your diagrams. Draw good diagrams. Label them. Think of why you need to find something. Tell me your thought process in a concise manner. Why are you using an equation? What makes you want to find an angle? I don't need you to explain algebra steps. First, draw a good and useful diagram (neatly, Jason). Second, decide how you are going to attack the problem and tell me this. Find an equation and solve the problem. Get organized. Number your steps. Watch your units and sig figs.Box your answer Third, go back and look for steps that need explanation or reasoning. Add some more information to your diagram. Comment on your answers.
